Rooms that are small

After being treated to a house, a WHOLE BEAUTIFUL HOUSE to stay at in Sydney while its owners were out of town (no, we didn't break and enter), we were certainly surprised to walk into our hotel room in Auckland. 

I use the world hotel "room" very loosely. What we had there, folks, was a shower stall. That doubled as a room.

Certainly, I wish I was kidding.  But indeed, there were 2 twin beds, and a shower stall/bathroom that was so tiny, one could both sit on the potty and wash their hair at the same time, while spitting toothpaste into the sink and catching some shut eye.

At first, we laughed it off. "Wow, this is tiny!" we'd say, scratching our heads at the marvel of all 4 of us fitting into the showercube at the same time. "It was built for brooms!" or "I can roll right out of bed and onto the toilet!" were statements that got the kids giggling.  Did I mention that this room also had a kitchen in it? A teensie one... you could wash dishes while reclining on the bed.

But maybe 4 minutes passed before claustrophobia set in for me. And everyone else. 

Thinking back on it, although the room made me insta-angry-claustrophobic, it was a good thing it was completely, ridiculously, totally a fail of a hotel room.  We weren't tempted to sleep in or laze about in the room. 

Nope. We were outta there at 7 am each morning and didn't come back until the kids were ready to drop. 

Right now you might be thinking... hmmm.  2 twin beds. Where did y'all sleep (can you tell we're in Texas right now?)?  Well, Tyler and I each took a bed. The kids slept on their handy-dandy camping mats and sleeping bags.

For four days.

In a nutshell, not our finest accommodation. But the beauty, the stunning scenery, the great green and blue outdoors of the North Island won us over anyway. I cannot believe we only stayed 4 days. Next year, 4 months (and we'll hit the South Island mostly).

On day 3 it stopped raining. We welcomed the sun out with such an adorable Kiwi family :)
