an idea.

Ah, Nie

For this shoot, Stephanie had an idea. Our only job was to make it happen. Oh, and to photograph it.

Here's the thing:  we do technically live in Southern California, but since we travel everywhere, we spend a LOT of our time searching for good locations in this and other countries in which to take pictures. Stephanie and Christian, for this shoot, wanted a pine tree-scape... with a lonely pine they could put lights on.

So Tyler and I searched and searched for the right location- but 1/2 hour before the shoot was supposed to start, we still had not found the perfect place. (It turns out, that in Utah, most pine trees in grow on steep mountains.) I was stressed to the max. Fifteen minutes before the shoot, we, in desperation, randomly made a left turn and came upon the perfect place.

Then realized we had not brought coats. Or gloves, socks, anything warm.

We checked under seats and scavenged the trunk and found a few warmer things. Tyler may or may not have ended up wearing girl socks, girl gloves and what? my girl scarf.

Then we saw that the hot chocolate thermos had busted open... leaving only 1.3 of the thermos still hot and the rest on the car floor.

We embraced the facts and figured it might still be enough for one warm mug full to share.

Then we realized that the generator we brought to power the tree lights was about 10,000 tons.

We realized that we are pretty much bodybuilders, so quit our whining.

Then we began to haul our gear out to the site and fell down into 3 feet of powdery snow.

We laughed at our misfortune and shoved snow in each other's faces.

And then the Nielsons came.

That's when the fun started.

The rest is kind of a blur. We were all freezing. But laughing, being silly, having a great time. Can you not have a great time around those 6?

It began and ended pretty quickly, due to the freezing temps and Tyler's and my penchant to shoot quickly with high (superhigh) energy.  I think Stephanie would say that her idea/dream turned out pretty nicely.

How about you... what's your idea? Let us make it happen.

end note: We have finished our scheduling for both the world tour and the US tour. Check either the side bar or the menu at the top of this post and see if we are coming to your 'hood.

Your photos are so beautiful! I love how you capture this family (and how you've photoed them in the past). Your images of them always manage to be so outside the box but retain such beauty. Love your blog!

You guys are awesome. I haven't checked in with your blog for a while, so I've missed out on regular postings. One thing I love about your photography "blog" is that you are both awesome writers! It is a treat to read about your adventures, and also personal stories about you and your family. I loved, LOVED the embarrassing snippets, starting with Tyler's (because I started with current and worked my way backwards) and then laughed my head off at Wendy's dancing sensation. Seriously, you two are so fun. Also I wanted to remind you to tell us the amazing story of how you adopted your adorable children. After all, you did say "remind me to tell you..." so I'm reminding you. Thanks for the stories and beautiful pictures! :)

I pinky swear promise that if you two make time to hang out there will be zero skinny pine trees or high wattage lights. I miss your faces. xo, Miq
